Christmas is about more than just shopping and opening presents when the clock strikes midnight. It is about family, friends, food, festivity, happiness, laughter, joy, music, and dancing! And Latinx fams do it all with extra passion and flare! 💃🏽

This year Pretty Strings has even more to celebrate because Allison (the brand's owner) is having her baby girl any day now!!!

We're popping bottles of coquito and indulging in velvety smooth flan this month and want to share these delicious traditional Puerto Rican holiday treats with you!

Fabulous Flan 🍮

A traditional dessert full of caramel flavor! (And, it's gluten free!!)

Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: about 1 hour
Serves: 8 (or less if they want big pieces!)

  • 5 eggs
  • 1 12oz can of evaporated milk
  • 1 14oz can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1.5 cups of white sugar
  • A pinch of salt

Before you begin, preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Part 1 - Make Caramel Syrup

This step requires patience and constant attention! Dedicate 15-20 minutes to watch this process, making sure the sugar melts slowly and DOES NOT BURN!

  • Pour 1 cup of sugar into a heavy pot/pan and melt over medium-low heat (add the sugar slowly and DO NOT mess with the temperature). No need to add butter.
  • Shake the pan occasionally to help the sugar melt evenly. Eventually, the sugar will start to brown, bubble, and liquefy. *Be careful, it is scorching hot!*
  • Once the sugar is 100% melted, pour it into your baking pan. It's important to swirl the baking pan around to make sure the caramel is covering the bottom and all sides of the pan.

Part 2 - Mix Up the Flan

  • Put the eggs, evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract, salt, and remaining sugar in a blender.
  • Blend all of these ingredients on high until the texture is silky smooth.
  • Pour this mixture on top of the caramel in your baking pan.

Part 3 - Bake It & Serve It

  • Grab a larger baking pan than the one with your flan mixture, and fill it half way with water.
  • Sit the pan with the flan inside of the pan with the water in it. This is called a water bath and helps the mixture solidify. Don't get water in the flan mixture!
  • Place the pans in the oven and bake at 350 degrees for 60-80 minutes, or until the center looks jiggly.
  • Remove the flan and allow to cool for 2-3 hours.
  • After the flan has cooled, use a knife to loosen the edges around your flan. Grab your serving dish or platter and place it over the baking pan.
  • Carefully flip the flan onto your serving dish, allowing all of the caramel to drizzle over the top.
  • Slice, serve and enjoy!😋

The Best Coquito 🧉

AKA Puerto Rican Eggnog

Serving Size: 8 Drinks (3-4oz each)

  • 1/2 of a 1 liter bottle of Bacardi

  • 1 12 oz. can of evaporated milk
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/4 cup of white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

3 Crazy Easy Steps:

  • Blend all ingredients in a blender on high for 2 minutes.
  • Be sure to taste it! Add more rum or cinnamon to your liking!
  • Serve chilled & garnish as desired (rainbow sprinkles or shredded coconut on the rim, a dash of cinnamon on top, etc.)
